From becoming homeless when she came out at 16 years of age in Sri Lanka to rebuilding her life and becoming a mum, hear Dil’s heart-warming and life affirming story.
Dil was born in Rome to a privileged Sri Lankan family but became homeless when she came out to her religious parents when she was in Sri Lanka... she was just 16 years old. When she was 19 she found her passion for media when she started working in Sri Lankan radio only to be fired based on her sexuality.
Like many LGBTQ+ people she immigrated in search of a country where she could be her true self. At the age of 25, Dil arrived in Dublin and within 24 hours of her feet touching Irish soil, she found herself dancing down the main street in Dublin in broad daylight singing “It’s raining men!” Serendipitously, her arrival coincided with Dublin Pride and she knew she had finally come home.
Dil later founded Insight Matters with her wife Anne Marie Toole and with a team of over 100 therapists they have the privilege of supporting over 600 clients in Ireland and internationally.
Dil is a psychotherapist who works with individuals online and face to face, nationally and internationally and has a special interest in gender, sexual and relationship diversity including clients identifying as LGBTQI+, same-sex and non-traditional relationships such as ethical non-monogamous and polyamorous relationships.
Dil is an accomplished broadcaster and journalist and for a decade she was a presented the award winning weekly programme “Global Village” on Newstalk 106-108, an Irish national radio station on the topics of social justice and mental health.
Dil was honoured with the Lord Mayor’s Awards for her contribution to civic life and received the Irish Tatler Woman of the Year Award for her work as a Marriage Equality campaigner.
Dil and Anne Marie have a 7 year old son called Phoenix and 5 year old son called Xavier who is on their gender fluid journey. Their children continually inspire them to strive to create an inclusive and compassionate world. More recently, Dil and Anne Marie have become polyamorous and have expanded their family to include their partner and her children into their joyful world.
